September 6, 1944
December 9, 2000

A Workman's Prayer to St. Joseph Glorious St. Joseph, model of all those who are devoted to labor, obtain for me the grace to work in a spirit of penance for the expiation of my many sins; to work consci-entiously, putting the call of duty above my inclinations; to work with gratitude and joy, considering it an honor to employ and de-velop, by means of labor, the gifts received from God; to work with order, peace, mod-eration and patience, without ever recoil-ing before weariness or difficulties; to work, above all, with purity of intention, and with detachment from self, having al-ways death before my eyes and the account ~ hich I must render of time lost, of talents wasted, of good omitted, of vain compla-cency in success, so fatal to the work ol God. All for Jesus, all for Mary, all after your example. 0 Patriarch joseph. Such Shall be my watchword in life and in death. Amen

10 "My father was a "farrier", an exclusive horseshoer. He and his brother had ashop in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. He later became a fireman for some years andthen Fire Chief until retiring and moving to Califoria. In California he again took up his old trade as farrier and with a portable outfit served groups handling shaw and race horses.

I remember several display cases of fancy polished horse shoes mounted on black velvet behind glass frames like large pictures. I wonder what happened to them.

My brother worked with my father and wasat Fort Riley, Kansas for a time practicing this trade which he continued doing after leaving there. He worked with our father until he passed away and continued on his own on a very limited basis out of Santa Rosa, California where they live." G.F. Kirsling 1/29/1990

LSU Health Sciences Center Tribute:

Dr. Marilyn L. Zimny, Professor Emeritus of Anatomy and retired Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Dean of the School of Graduate Studies at LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, peacefully passed away due to complications of cancer at 7:00 a.m. on January 7, 2006. She was born on December 12, 1927 in Chicago.

Dr. Zimny retired after 44 years of service to the health professions in Louisiana in 1998, but it wasn?t long before she was pressed into service once more, serving as Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs at the LSU System from January 4, 2000 through June 30, 2002.

"Marilyn Zimny was a unique and magnificent scholar, teacher and administrator, one of the best with whom I have ever been associated,? said Dr. William Jenkins, President of the LSU System. ?Our many collective memories of her will endure forever, as will her academic legacy. May she rest in well deserved peace."

As the chief academic officer of both LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, and then the LSU System, Dr. Zimny worked closely with the Louisiana Board of Regents.

"Marilyn was colorful, incisive and brilliant,? said Roland Toups, Chairman of the Louisiana Board of Regents. ?She was honest and never hesitant to speak her mind. She was also a lot of fun to be around. We will all miss her dearly."

After earning her doctorate from Loyola University in Chicago in 1954, Dr. Zimny joined the LSU Health Sciences Center faculty as an Assistant Professor of Anatomy. She rose through the academic ranks after teaching and being awarded federal research funding, publishing 125 scientific articles including 66 scientific papers and 59 abstracts, becoming a full professor in 1964. In 1975, she became the first female head of anatomy at LSU Health Sciences Center and one of only four female anatomy department heads in the country.

?Marilyn Zimny was one of the most outstanding professors and administrators that LSU Health Sciences Center has ever had,? said Dr. Allen Copping, former LSU Health Sciences Center Chancellor and President Emeritus of the LSU System. ?Her loyalty and dedication were remarkable and served the LSU System and Louisiana well. The lives of all who knew her were immeasurably enriched.?

In 1961 and 1962, Dr. Zimny was named to membership of a select group of faculty sent to San Jose, Costa Rica to establish a medical school there. Although not fluent in Spanish, she was determined to give her best to the students and so she spent each evening having her lectures translated and being tutored by a local physical therapist so she could give her daily anatomical presentations in their native tongue. She was honored at the 25th anniversary of the first graduating class of the Costa Rican Medical University.

Her research in degenerative arthritis was considered to be tops in the field nationally. She was also nationally known for her studies in ground squirrels about the physiology of animal hibernation and its relationship to human body function, particularly metabolism. She fondly referred to the students working in her lab on these experiments as her ?ground squirrels? as well. She participated, by invitation of the Office of Naval Research, in the First and Second Symposia of Mammalian Hibernation at M.I.T. and in Helsinki, Finland. She took a sabbatical to work in electron microscopy at the Institute of Arctic Biology at the University of Alaska. Her findings had application in increasing knowledge of how man might better survive harshly cold environments. Dr. Zimny served on the Biology Committee of the World Book Encyclopedia and was also a recognized authority on sports medicine.

Beloved by many generations of LSU Health Sciences Center students, Dr. Zimny was awarded the Distinguished Faculty Service Award by the LSU Alumni Federation. At that time, the LSU Alumni News wrote, ?In her 15 LSU years, she has seen hundreds of her former students, later physicians, practice medicine across the length and width of Louisiana and beyond, to achieve a level of success and service which would elevate the heart rate of even the most staid of educators.? She was voted Best Pre-Clinical Lecturer by LSU Health Sciences Center students for three years in a row and Most Popular Teacher by the 1979 Class of LSU dental students. She was named an honorary member of the Theta Kappa chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon (the national dental honor society) and Alpha Omega Alpha (the national medical honor society).

?A gifted educator, Marilyn Zimny influenced thousands of young lives and careers, including my own,? said Dr. Larry Hollier, Chancellor of LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. ?But her generosity extended beyond sharing her extensive knowledge. She not only gave me a research job in her lab that resulted in the first three papers on my Curriculum Vitae, but she hired me to paint rental houses during the summers so I could earn living expenses. She had a wonderful sense of humor; everyone who knew her could recognize that joyous laugh in any crowd. She had a tremendous love of life, and this world will be a lesser place without her intelligence, kindness, and selflessness. A brilliant scientist in her own right, success to Marilyn Zimny was not measured by her own accomplishments, but by those of her students.?

She was awarded an LSU Distinguished Faculty Fellowship in 1987, and a professorship was established in her name in LSU Health Sciences Center?s School of Medicine by the alumni in 1995. Dr. Zimny was given the Women in Medicine Award by LSUHSC?s School of Medicine in New Orleans in 1996.

Reflecting upon the changes she saw during her academic tenure when she retired, one of the most notable was that more and more women were entering the health professions. ?When I began teaching at LSU in 1954, you were lucky to have a couple of women in the class. Now women represent about half of the class in medicine,? Dr. Zimny said in 1998.

Dr. Zimny was elected President of the Association of Anatomy Chairmen and President of the Southern Society of Anatomists. She served as Program Secretary of the American Association of Anatomists from 1990-94 and served on its Executive Committee from 1981-85. She was Women Liaison Officer to the Association of American Medical Colleges for the Association of Anatomy Chairmen and she was President of the Louisiana Society for Electron Microscopy.

Dr. Zimny was listed in The American Men of Science, Who?s Who of American Women, Who?s Who in the South and Southeast, Two Thousand Women of Achievement, Outstanding Educators of America, The World Who?s Who of Women, Who?s Who in America and Who?s Who in the World.

Dr. Zimny is survived by her beloved friend, Ms. June ?T? Thomas, and seven cousins, Hazel Prucha of Western Springs, Illinois, Carol St. Ores, Denise St. Ores, Jacqueline St. Ores Larson, and Deborah St. Ores Moneyhan of Jacksonville, Florida, Dorothy Willin, of Glenview, Illinois, and Scott St. Ores of Yulee, Florida.

In Loving Memory of
PHILOMEN ROGOWSKI
August 8, 1916
January 28, 2000
God saw you getting tired
When a cure was not to be
So He closed His arms around you
And whispered 'Come to Me'
You didn't deserve what you
went through.
And so He gave you rest
Gods garden must be beautiful
He only takes the best
And when I saw you sleeping
So peaceful and free of pain
I could not wish you back
To suffer that again.
PISARSKI/DZIKOSKI FUNERAL HOME

Story By Philomen Piotrowski/Rogowski)

On November 8, 1937, Edward Rogowski, son of the late Leon and
Mathilda (Gosh) Rogouski married Philornen Piotrowski, daughter of
Joseph and Valeria (Literski) Piotrowski at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel
Church, Fancher. oRev. Peter Borowskt was Pastor.

Attending the bride was her sister, Regina as maid of honor, and Pearl (Trzebiatowski) Suski, Evelyn (Suski) Sharafinski as bridesmaids. Ray Piotrowski, Bill Suski were groomsmen and Eugene Piotrowski was ring bearer.

The reception for the immediate family was at the home of the bride's parents. A dance was held in the evening at Rickman's Hall in Amherst Junction. Music was furnished by the Raflick Orchestra.

The night before the wedding we had a bad storm. There was a power outage at church and the organ couldn't be played for the wedding march. So Chubby Sopa went up on the choir and hand pumped the bellows and we had music.

Also, th~ night of the storm, John and Gertie Clodowski's barn burned when struck by lightning. John's mother haa died the day before so John was unable to attend our wedding.

After the dance we took the bride dance money, paid the orchestra and the liquor bill, having $10.00 left to our name.

We settled on the John Herman farm which we bought with money we borrowed from Dad Piotrowski. We owned the place till selling it in
1969.

Before I was married I had a choice of a fur coat or a wash machine. Of course I chose a wash machine. It was run by a gas engine, as we had no electricity or running water. We did have running water if you ran fast with a full bucket while the windmill pumped. I poured this water into a copper boiler on top of a wood stove to heat until boiling. Then lifted the hot water with a pail and poured it into the washer. It took between 15 and 20 pails of wash and rinse water to do the laundry. Good exercise!

Besides the wash machine the folks also bought us a bed. Ed got two cows from my dad and one cow and two heifers from his folks. We milked about five cows by spring.

The first item we needed badly, was a water tank up in the barn to water the livestock. It so happened I had $25.00 saved while doing housework for two months in Milwaukee at a dollar a day the year before. So...there went my hard earned money.
On Sunday, September 11, 1938, Robert was born at home. He weighed 9 pounds. Dr. Shroeder from Amherst delivered him at 6:30 P.M. after spending most of the Sunday with us.

Bob was baptized Sunday, September 18. The godparents were Joseph and Valeria Piotrowski.
Dad Piotrowski was almost as happy as we that it was a boy. This
was his first grandson, after having 8 granddaughters by then. Vic
had 5, Ambrose had 2 and Gertie 1.

At this time we drove a (rusty) 1929 Model A Ford. Then in 1939 we went to Chicago and bought a 1936 Chevrolet from Ed's brother Ray for $250. We drove this until 1949, when we bought our first new car, a black two door Chevrolet. We sold our Model A for $37.

Annette was born on Sunday, March 2, 1941. 1 helped Ed do the chores that evening as usual. By 8:30 P.M. we called Dr. Doersch from Amherst. She was born at 10:30 P.M. She weighed 8 1/2 pounds.

By 11:00 that night we got a blizzard and got drifted in until the following Wednesday morning. Ed's mother was with us from Sunday ~o Wednesday morning.

Annette was baptized the following Sunday, March 9. John and Mathilda Herman were her godparents.

In July of 1942 we added to our barn. We had several neighbors helping out. Ed got a pony of beer to quench their thirst. While Ed was busy doing other things, Bob joined the men by the keg (he was almost 4) and helped himself. By the time Ed saw this, he was staggering and the men were laughing. Bob said to Ed "...I want to be a man."

Norman was also born at home on Thursday, October 29, 1942. He weighed 7 pounds. He was three weeks premature. So when we called Dr. Doersch he wasn't available. It was his day off and couldn't be reached. Ed finally got Dr. Stanley Miller from Stevens Point to come. He drove in the yard just after Norman was born. Ed's mother was with me at the time.

He was baptized November 8 on our 5th wedding anniversary. Godparents were Michael and Mary Gosh.

In spring of 1943 we bought our first tractor, a John Deere. (We farmed with horses until this time.)

May 18, 1943 we bought the Wagner farm by Arnott. We had planned to move there, but by October the house burned down while Bill and Pearl Suski were tenants. We farmed the land for three years and then sold it to Emil Perzinski. He remodeled the granary for living quarters.
Annette had a bad case of whooping cough in the fall of 1943. She was 2 1/2 years and Norman was 1 year old. They were given shots and finally recovered. Bob didn't get sick.

We started using a milking machine powered by an engine in 1942.

Then by 1944 we got our electricity. How nice it was to have lights and power. I especially was happy to get an electric Iron for clothes. At that time everything needed to be ironed as it wasn't permanent press or polyester.

We bought our first T.V. in 1951. Everyone enjoyed it. The Herinans still didn't have a T.V., so every Thursday night Ed's mom, Ernie and Ann Herman came over to watch the Cousin Fuzzy show.

About 1950 we bought 67 acres of land adjoining our farm from Arthur Raymond. Uncle Frank Piotrowskl used to own it and lived there. It was known as the "fun factory" by my brothers. They enjoyed going there.

Bob started school In September 1944 at the Arnott School. He stayed there fo~ three years before transferring to St. Mary's, Fancher.

Annette started school September of 1946 and stayed at the Arnott School for two years. She then went to St. Mary's.

Norman learned how to read from Annette at the age of 4, as she read to him after school. One day he went along to visit at school. When the teacher heard him read, she asked us to enroll him next fall. So in September 1947 he started school. He turned 5 years old October 29, that fall. Norman also transferred to St. Mary's.

All three received their first Holy Communion, Confirmation and Graduated from St. Mary's of Mt. Cannel, Fancher.

All had their tonsils removed on the same day In the spring of 1948. At that time the doctors thought it was for the best.

In November 1952, Rudy's first wife (Harriet) died of a brain tumor. We took care of his two children (Kenny & Pattie) for a short time.

In January 1953, Mom Piotrowski became ill and died suddenly on January 23.

In February of that same year I went for a check-up to the Marshfield Clinic. Doctors found a diseased ovary and surgery was performed on the 26th of February. After a biopsy, it was found I

had a malignancy. Another surgery was scheduled for May 1. That very day I went into the hospital with viral pneumonia. I was hospitalized for three weeks, receiving 58 penicillin shots during that stay. My surgery was rescheduled for July 5. A complete hysterectomy. I was 36 years old.

In the meantime my dad married for the second time on July 4 to Dorothy Piekarski. We attended the wedding before I entered the hospital. While I was still in the hospital, Norman had an emergency appendectomy at St. ~ in Stevens Point. He was almost 10. Needless to say, it was a year to remember.

I am always grateful to John and Gertie for persuading me to go along with them for a complete check-up to Marshfield. If..not for them, I'm sure I wouldn't be here.

Ed and the kids managed to do the farming, chores and housework somehow. Not only that...they drove to Marshfield.after chores to visit me.

The day I came home, the first job they were happy to give back to me was the washing and the packing of ~ggs. They had trouble keeping the shells from breaking.

In the fall of 1956, Ed bought a big barn by Galloway. He and a neighbor, Victor Shulfer drove there taking it down for the lumber. The following year we built a large barn from this lumber on our farm.

Bob started high school at P.J. Jacobs in 1952 graduated in 1956. Prior to that he joined the National Guards. After graduation he enlisted into the Air Force. He left October 17 for basic training and remained in the Air Force until October 1960. He returned home and then started working for A.C. Spark Plug in Milwaukee.

Bob was married on October 13, 1962 at St. James Church, Amherst to Lou Ann Dombrowski, daughter of Robert and Hattie Dombrowski.

They made their home in Columbus, Ohio. Leon was born there on November 28, 1963. In July 1964 they moved back to join us in farming. We bought the Vogel farm that summer and they moved in there. Later Bob bought our dairy farm so we exchanged homes. They had three more children Paul, Bobbi and Claire.

Later Bob developed arthritis in his back and decided a city job would be better for him. We bought back our dairy farm in December
1968.

to live

Annette attended P.J. Jacobs High School in 1954 for one year as bus rides were available. She transferred to Maria High School the next fall, where she graduated in 1958.

She started work at Sentry in Stevens Point. She transferred to the Milwaukee Branch in the fall of 1961.

She was married October 12, 1963 at St. Nary of Mt. Cannel, Fancher to Casimir Niescior, son of Casimer Sr. and Josephine Niescior of Milwaukee. They made their home in Milwaukee until 1967 when they moved to Big Bend. They still live there with their three children, Joseph, Linda and Man.

Norman graduated from 8th grade in 1955. He then attended Pacelli and graduated from there in 1959.

In his senior year he won the Bausch and Laumb Science award. At graduation he received a medal ~or perfect attendance during his four years of high school.

He started college at St. Mary's, Winona, Minnesota in 1959. He was 17 years old. He stayed only one semester, being lonesome there.

He then started clerical work at Sentry in Stevens Point. He and Annette drove to work together, until he lost his life in a car accident on October 21, 1961, just a week before his 19th birthday.

Dad Piotrowski had died the week before on October 14. Norman was a pallbearer for his funeral.

In March 1969 we sold out to the Nolans. They sold everything at an auction.

Ed started working for the Worth Fishing Tackle Company in the summer of 1969, We continued cash cropping on our farm.

Leon and Paul (Bob's boys) came to stay every summer until they were through high school. Joe (Annette's son) also came some of the summers. They helped with the haying and painting of the buildings.

In the summer of 1977, Bob and his family took us along on a vacation trip to Canada. The whole trip was enjoyed very much, especially Niagara Falls.

In May of 1980 Ed planned to retire, but in February I had a heart attack. I stayed in the hospital for 3 1/2 weeks. So Ed worked another year because of medical insurance.

On July 20, 1980, lightning struck our hay barn and it burned to the ground along with 6,000 bales of hay and machinery.

We built a new pole barn that summer in time for the next hay crop. We continued making hay for another four years with the help of the boys.

Later they found other jobs in the city so we now sell standing hay to our neighbors...and we go fishing!

Ed's mother died July 12, 1981 from a stroke at the Veterans' Home at King. His stepfather (John Herman) continued living at the home until his death on February 3, 1984.

That same February, I had bypass surgery after being on medication for four years, since my heart attack. I had five bypasses. I came home from the hospital in eight days. Annette came to help out my first few days at home.

By spring I was out planting my garden, which I enjoy.

On June23, 1986, we sold our farm to Bob. He wanted to keep it in the family. We plan to live here, while we can take care of ourselves.
