    Notes

    • settling in America

      1868-1881 , Parisville, Michigan area

John brought his family to America in 1868. They departed Germany in late winter/early spring 1868 aboard the ship UNION. Traveling with John were is wife Katherine Oschandel Rutkowski and their children John, Alex and Frank. Also aboard the ship were Mathias Rutkowski (John's younger brother), Tom and Katherine (Rutkowski) O'Parka (John's sister) and their children, Lucas Oschandel (Katherine Oschandel Rutkowski's older brother) and his wife and children, Frank Iwicki and Andrew Iwicki and his wife Maryann (Katherine Oschenel Rutkowski's half brothers) and John Oparka and his wife Veronica (Tom Oparka's brother). During the first leg of the trip, John and Katherine's young son, 6 year old John, died. He was buried in England.

After arriving in New York on May 4, 1868, the Rutkowski's and O'Parka's traveled to Michigan. The Oschandel's, Iwicki's and John Oparka went to Chicago. John Rutkowski purchased land in section 5 of Minden Township in Sanilac County, Michigan. His brother in law, Tom O'Parka purchased land across the road from John in Paris Township, Huron County, Michigan. John commenced to build a log home for his family. Potatoes were planted around tree stumps. Their cow was loose all winter in the woods so they wouldn't have to feed it.

John also worked in the lumber camps in Bay City. He and John Grifka would walk the 60+ miles home once a month.

On September 5, 1881 a forest fire swept through the Thumb of Michigan. According to the September 16, 1881 issue of the Huron County News, John Rutkowski lost his house and barn but saved the stock. The family saved their lives in this terrible fire by going into a green corn field.

John's sister, Katherine, and her husband Tom O'Parka lost everything they owned in the fire. After the fire, 2 or 3 families helped build a large cabin on the Tom O'Parka farm to house their families through the upcoming winter. During the winter, material was gathered to build homes for the remaining families.
