    Michael von Koziczkowski with wife Franciszka and 7 children, first documented Polish settlers to Portage County, Wisconsin. (Arrived in NY on 4 Sep 1857; Left Hamburg on 7 Jul 1857).
  • 1857: St Martin Catholic Church, Ellis, Portage County, WI
    Built in Ellis (Poland Corners) and organized by German and Irish settlers, and later attended by Polish settlers. (Current church building erected in 1866).

    Adam Klesmit (Kleinschmidt) with with Josefina and 2 children, Joseph Platta with wife Marianna and 4 children, and John Zynda with wife Clara and 6 children. (Arrived in NY on 9 Aug 1858 from Bremen).

    76 Poles (16 families) left Bremen on 6 Jun 1858 on ship Heinrich arrived in Quebec on 26 Jul 1858

    37 people: Christian Dzwonkowsky with wife Josephine and 3 children, Casimir Lukaszewitz and wife Veronica (and her parents Stanislaw and Margaretha Konopacki), Franz Wojak with wife Catherine and 1 child and (and his parents Anton and Antonia Woyak and 5 children), Joseph Jadzewski with wife Josephine and 2 children, Joseph Green (Greniz) with wife Dorotha and 3 children, and Jacob Werachowski with wife Pauline (and her father Mathias Rzepinski and sister Theodosia) and 5 children. (Left Hamburg on 15 Jun 1859 to Quebec).

    Peter Kronopeski was identified as also coming in 1859, or the next year, from Winona, Minnesota. And also arrived in 1859: Daczyk and Kruzycki.

    First Polish Settlement in Winona. Jacob and Franciszka von Bronk with 4 sons from Wiele; Michael and Barbara Konkel with daughter and 2 sons; left Hamburg on 14 May 1859 on the ship Elbe and arrived in Quebec. By 1860 census they were living in Winona, MN.

    About 40 Polish families built Church in Ellis at Poland Corners. In 1871 it was dismanteled and moved to Polonia.

    Prussia and Austria defeat Denmark over control of Schleswig-Holstein, and then feud over who will be in charge

    Built by Polish families in 1864 in Ellis (Poland Corners). First rural Catholic Church in WI. Dismanteled and relocated to Polonia in 1871.

    14 Jun - 23 Aug 1866; Austro-Prussian War of 1866 - Seven Weeks War. Austro-Prussian War over control of Schleswig-Holstein; Italy and some small states support Prussia; Bavaria, Würtemberg, Saxony, Hanover, Baden, the two Hesses support Austria. Prussia invades Hanover, Hesse and Saxony; Prussia defeats Austria at Battle of Königgrätz, where Prussian tactics, technology (needle guns, railways) prove superior. Prussia expands from 19 million population to 23.5 as it absorbs Schleswig-Holstein, Hanover, Hesse, Nassau, the city of Frankfort; it also controls Saxony

  • 1867: Poland Corners names Ellis, Portage County, WI
    Jordan Road (current Highway 66) and County J crossroads are known as Poland Corners, and was named Ellis (after the current mayor of Stevens Point) in 1867. --- Susan Bigalke Chapman's grandfather Theodore Bigalke had a general store in Ellis at the turn of the century. Her father, Chester Bigalke, was born in a house across the street from the general store.

  • 19 Jul 1870: Franco-Prussian War
    19 Jul 1870; The Franco-Prussian War began. Napoleon declared war on Bismarck. Emperor Napoleon III of France declared war on Germany under Otto von Bismarck. Napoleon was defeated in three months and abdicated.

    8-10 Oct 1871, Great Chicago Fire causes extensive damage to city, over 300 deaths, and over 100,000 were left homeless (about one third of the population of Chicago), as 17,500 buildings over 4.0 square miles of the city was destroyed.

  • 1871: St. Maria's Catholic Church, Ellis, Portage Couty, WI
    Built in Ellis at Poland Corners and was torn down about 1918. Known as St. Maria's or later the Condemned Church. --- Susan Bigalke Chapman's aunt remembered her father Theodore Bigalke, who lived at Poland Corners, helped tear down this unconcencrated Church and the lumber was donated to Stanislaus Church in Stevens Point.
  • 1871—1876: St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ellis, Portage County, WI
    Church built in 1867 at Ellis at Poland Corners. In 1871 it was dismanteled and moved to Polonia. It was destroyed by fire in 1875. It was replaced by Sacred Heart Church in Polonia.

    St. Casimir Catholic Church was a mission church built in 1871 in Hull. Re-built in 1913.

    Alexander Graham Bell invents the telephone.
  • 1876: Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Polonia, Portage County, WI
    Sacred Heart Church and convent-school buildings were started and completed in 1884. It was built of local stone and capped with parallel steeples. This Church served until 1902, and replaced by larger structure that resembled the European cathedrals. In 1934 it was struck by lightning and partially burned. It was razed and replaced. --- Susan Bigalke Chapman's grandfather Theodore Bigalke told her he helped to re-built the Church.

    St. Peter Catholic Church was built by 53 families in 1876. Burndt by fire in 1896. Re-built in 1897.

    Built in 1881/1882. Re-built in 1958.

    Built as mission Church of St. Michael's Church of Junction City in 1883. Re-built in 1910.

    Built in 1884 as a daughter parish of Sacred Heart. Re-built as a Gothic revival building in 1905.
