Deceased Name: William Sobieski "Bud"
William Lawrence "Bud" Sobieski died on Thursday, March 27, 2003 of pulmonary fibrosis.
Born on a farm in Marysville, Idaho on Oct. 2, 1923, Bud was delivered by his grandmother Staker, a midwife. His parents were Frank and Pearl Staker Sobieski.
Born two months prematurely, dad got his nickname from a hired hand who kept him alive by placing him in a shoebox near the warmth of the stove during those critical first hours.
A veteran of World War II, dad served in the European theater as a soldier in the 433rd Signal Battalion of the Arm Air Corps. He landed at the Utah Beach on D-Day and was attached to Patton's tank unit when they liberated Buchenwald Concentration Camp.
He married Muriel Steel on July 11, 1946 and became an instant father when he adopted her two small daughters from a previous marriage. Together they had four more children. They moved from Idaho to Salt Lake City in 1950. He drove truck for Garrett Freight Lines for 37 years and was able to provide a wonderful life for his family.
Dad has now joined the love of his life, Muriel, who preceded him in death nearly two years ago. Also preceded in death by his daughter Lynne, his parents, a brother and two sisters. He is survived by his children: Suzan (Randy) Buchmiller, Randall (Joyce) Sobieski, Michael (Micki) Sobieski, Douglas (Nikki) Sobieski and Debra (Steve) Wolfley, 18 grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren; also two brothers, Dee Sobieski, Jim Sobieski and sister, Dawn Ann Sobieski Noakes.
